Food & dining
Practical pointers for ordering food, explaining preferences and enjoying China’s regional cooking.
Food is one of the pleasures of travelling in China. Take your time with regional specialities, and have a few useful words ready when you order.
Point, ask and share
A photo menu or the dish’s Chinese name can help when ordering. Ask about portion sizes, especially when dishes are intended for the table to share.
Explain your preferences clearly
If you prefer less chilli, try “少辣” (shǎo là). For dietary requirements, keep a clear written explanation in Chinese and discuss the ingredients with staff before ordering.
Enjoy the local rhythm
Try a slower breakfast, a neighbourhood noodle shop or a Cantonese dim sum meal. Opening times and menus vary, so check directly with the restaurant for the day you visit.
Regional food glossaries, illustrated ordering notes and neighbourhood dining guides are being prepared. Restaurant reservations are not offered.
